THE HIGHWAY MAP

I picked this map in case I want to take a trip to another state. It has highways and the number where they are located. I also would use this map for my social studies class because we might take a test on the state where it is located.

Map of Louisiana Parishes

I like this map because, for one, it is very clear.

These are the reasons why I would use this map.....

It is easy to see and I picked it out for my teacher. I would use this map because it tells people the parishes of Louisiana. I would use this map because it shows us parishes, it shows the color of the parishes, and it also shows us how the parishes are shaped. I would also use this map in social studies. So that's why I would use this map of the parishes.

Unit 2: MAPS

As September gets rolling, LanguageX is starting Unit 2: Map it Out. This unit is all about the many uses of maps. Throughout this unit students will be posting maps that illustrate different uses of maps - and hopefully some maps they've created on their own!

Let's get things started! Here is a map I found on a website called Strange Maps. This map is used to show the areas of the country where people root for different baseball teams.

Think about it: Do you agree with the map? Would you draw the team areas differently? What would this map look like for football?

Six Steps Medallion: Let You Literacy Shine

This is the Six Steps of Literacy medallion that is posted in the LangaugeX classroom. The six steps are:

1. Phonemic Awareness and Phonics

2. Word Recognition and Spelling

3. Vocabulary and Morphology

4. Grammar and Usage

5. Listening and Reading Comprehension

6. Speaking and Writing

Every lesson uses all six steps because all six steps are essential to literacy. Without the foundational steps students get stuck on later steps, unable to move forward. In LanguageX we build the literacy framework so that all students can move forward in reading!

Welcome to LangaugeX

Welcome to the LanguageX (also known as Language!) at Southeast Middle School blog.

LangaugeX is a reading program that uses the six components of literacy to enhance student reading levels.

So why do we need a blog? I am hoping this blog will serve a number of purposes:

1) To give students an outlet for the skills they are learning in LanguageX.

2) To connect students across blocks who are learning about the same topics.

3) To provide students with enrichment on the unit topics used in the LanguageX program.

4) To keep parents informed about the content and skills students are learning in LanguageX.

5) To celebrate student achievement.

I hope that students and parents alike will enjoy reading about what my class is up to and what they have to say!
